God has given us both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can take new courage, for we can hold on to his promise with confidence. This confidence is like a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain of heaven into God’s inner sanctuary. (Hebrews 6:18-19)

A symbol points beyond itself to something significant. For instance, the flag of the United States symbolizes the fifty current states with stars and the thirteen original states with bars.

Likewise, the biblical authors often used symbols to point to a greater reality. The writer of Hebrews used an anchor to symbolize the truthfulness of God’s Word, the certainty of His promises, and the integrity of His person: God has given us both his promise and his oath... This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. (Hebrews 6:18–19)

Few exemplified this truth better than Abraham. When God reiterated His promise to give the patriarch many descendants, He said, “Because you have obeyed me and have not withheld even your son, your only son, I swear by my own name that I will certainly bless you” (Genesis 22:16-17). God not only promised; He underlined the promise by swearing an oath by Himself—for no greater oath was possible—that He would do as He promised. And He absolutely did!

This is one of countless examples that should convince us that God means what He says and does what He promises.

Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. (Hebrews 6:18)

When you lack confidence in yourself or in this world, you can remain confident in God. Others will always prove untrustworthy, but the Lord has a heart of integrity. No matter what, you can face life with hope and confront challenges with confidence knowing that as you rely on what God has promised, your anchor will hold. The storms may blow and life may drag, but your anchor never will!
