I’ve heard the question asked many times…

If you knew Jesus was coming back tomorrow, what would you do?

That’s a good question. But from my experience, it’s often asked in an attempt to elicit guilt and a pressure to shape up your life. Almost like, “Jesus is coming back so you’d better start acting holy!”

Honestly, I think there’s a better question to ask. And it’s this…

If you were fully aware that Jesus is here with us today, how would you do what you do?

You see, most believers would agree they want to be found “holy and blameless” when Jesus returns. But how do we “do” holiness?

First of all, we must realize that holiness has already been done for us…

We have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.... For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.... “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.” (Hebrews 10:10, 14, 17)

Then second, we live out the holiness Jesus accomplished for us on the cross…

For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. (Titus 2:11–13)

The same grace that saved us now teaches us how to live in the holiness that we already have in Christ. That’s a completely different paradigm than the “straighten up or face your punishment” approach many people take to the Second Coming.

Be encouraged that you don’t have to clean yourself up to be ready for Christ’s return. In Him, you’re fully blameless and acceptable to God—and are free to live in His abundant grace!

Gracious Lord, I raise my hands and praise You for Your grace today. I celebrate the truth that You have made me holy by grace. And by that grace, You are teaching me to live in holiness. Search my heart right now. Show me any hurtful ways in me. Free me from false fear and guilt. I wait with hope and great expectation for Your day of return. Amen.
