The Bible has a lot to say about marriage. But if there’s one thing that stirs the emotions of people, it’s the subject of submission.
Ephesians 5 is the passage to turn to. But before you dive in, let me say that these verses require very careful reading. The point that’s often missed is the overarching principle given right at the outset:
Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. (Ephesians 5:21)
Which means husbands and wives are supposed to submit to one another.
How does that work? Continue to read and you’ll discover that men are to love their wives as Christ loved the church. Husbands, this is your calling: to sacrifice yourself—your desires, your dreams, and even your longings—for the good
of your wife!
And wives? Your role in marital submission is to let your husband do just that!
It’s a beautiful thing when a marriage functions like this as God intends. A husband takes the lead by sacrificing himself for his wife. She then honors him by allowing him to do that—and both husband and wife discover they’re stepping
into God’s best for them.
In my experience, when a husband starts loving his wife this way, a woman can’t wait to respond to him.
