Picture a young child trying to tie his own shoelaces.

He bends down, grabs hold of the laces, and gets started. He’s seen other people do it. Surely it can’t be too hard?

He has a good shot at it but fails. Sighing, he tries again, twisting the laces randomly—hoping this time it’ll turn out better. But no.

Dad’s looking on. “Would you like some help with that?”

“No. I’m fine. I can do it.”

So he tries again. And again. But all he ends up with is a knotty mess— and a good deal of frustration, disappointment, and anger.

It seems to me that so often we can be like that little boy—and it’s certainly true when it comes to family relationships. We fumble about hoping for success, only to find we can’t make things work.

And worst of all, we refuse to turn to our heavenly Father for help! He’s here, longing to give counsel and strength. And yet we carry on alone...

Friend, let me tell you—when it comes to family relationships, we can’t manage on our own! Our families are under attack, and without God’s intervention they will quickly become places of disharmony and distance rather than homes filled with love and joy as God intended them to be.

So what’s the remedy?

In Ephesians 5:18, Paul gives us the answer: be filled with the Spirit.

It’s not that we need more of the Spirit—because He comes to us in all His fullness when we first submit to Christ. Rather, it’s that you need to give yourself and your family over to Him!

So give the Holy Spirit an “all-areas access pass”! Let Him do what only He can do—bring lasting joy and transformation to your family relationships!
