You Need Rest

Jill and Pete Briscoe

Are you teetering on the edge of burnout, feeling like you have nothing more to give? But instead of resting, do you power through and intensify your efforts with work, family, and growing in your faith—only to become even more exhausted?

Burnout will leave you physically, emotionally, and spiritually depleted, and sometimes it causes you to lose perspective on God—thinking He wants you to do more and more! Meanwhile, God is patiently waiting for you to run out of strength. Because He knows that what you really need is to rest in Him.

But what does that look like? How do you stop when there are endless demands on your time and opportunities to do good? How do you find rest in God’s refreshing and reassuring touch?

Pete and Jill Briscoe open Scripture in this series and share important teaching that even mature Christians struggle to grasp. They’ll show you how to rest so that instead of doing good things for God, He’s doing God-things through you!

Messages From This Series:

  1. 1. The Promise of Rest

    Pete Briscoe

Wouldn’t it be great if we could stay at rest even when conflict, stress, and trials push in on us? The Lord made a promise that we could enter His rest and that promise still stands today. Can you abandon your desire to strive in your own strength and find rest in His hands?

In this message, Pete Briscoe talks about the promise of rest available to all believers.

    Scripture:  Hebrews 4:1 - 4:11

  2. 2. The Normal Christian Life

    Pete Briscoe

Have you ever wondered what a normal Christian life looks like—what the core aspects of a faith walk are, or why your faith walk looks different from someone else’s?

In this message, Pete Briscoe seeks to answer these questions by outlining a passage of Scripture that he believes to be the secret to understanding the Bible and the Christian life. He shows us what it looks like to dance with the Spirit instead of marching to a set of rules.

    Scripture:  Galatians 2:20

  3. 3. Do Nothing

    Pete Briscoe

Jesus’ first instruction to the faithful disciples before He ascended to heaven was to do nothing! That was their first assignment. It sounds crazy considering there were millions of people who needed to hear the Good News of salvation through Jesus. And yet, Jesus told them to stay put in Jerusalem and do nothing—nothing except to wait for the Holy Spirit.

Why was this instruction so important and instrumental as the early church was launched? What can we learn from studying Acts that will add new life to our work for the Kingdom?

In this message Pete Briscoe applies this important teaching from Jesus to today’s disciples and asks the question: What would our lives look like if instead of doing good things for God, we asked the Holy Spirit to do God-things through us?

    Scripture:  Acts 1:1 - 1:5

  4. 4. Rest Stops

    Jill Briscoe

One of the best known passages in the Bible is Psalm 23. It describes the relationship between a shepherd and His flock, in which He guides them through pastures, hills and dark valleys. In every case, the sheep are content because the shepherd is there, offering protection and comfort. We are the sheep in this story!

Jill Briscoe teaches that no matter what is happening in our lives, good or bad, the only way we can find true contentment—and even joy—in every situation is by trusting in the Lord, our shepherd, who promises to never leave us.

    Scripture:  Psalm 23

  5. 5. Martha — Busyness

    Jill Briscoe

What does your daily schedule look like? Is it full of errands and events? Sometimes we become workaholics and worriers, filling our days with too many tasks and constant concerns about things we can’t control rather than taking time to focus on the most important thing of all.

In this message, Jill Briscoe uses the example of Martha to show us instead how Jesus would want us to fill our time.

    Scripture:  Luke 10:38 - 10:42

  6. 6. Take a Break

    Pete Briscoe

If you’re feeling overworked, tired, and about ready to give up, then take time to cease, rest, and celebrate—the Bible calls it Sabbath. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Sabbath has the ability to fill your world with Life and bring energy, creativity, clarity, and hope through the person of Jesus Christ.

In this message Pete Briscoe encourages you to set aside time for Sabbath, and he shares three things that God has for you when you make yourself available to Him through His gift of rest.

    Scripture:  Exodus 20:8 - 20:11 , Genesis 2:1 - 2:3
