A View from the Porch Swing

Jill Briscoe

Sometimes we live in green pastures where everything is lush and peaceful. Other times we're walking in shadows that are dark and foreboding, and we're scared. And then there are moments when we are lucky enough to be on the top of the highest hill, and life couldn't get better.

We would probably choose to spend our life on the hilltop... but that's not reality.

Jill teaches from Psalm 23 and from Matthew 11 to explain that no matter what is happening in our lives, good or bad, the only way we can find true contentment in every situation is by trusting in the Lord. We're tempted to run from trouble. We have a hard time slowing down to relax in His pastures. But Jill describes these "rest stops" as important times of growth in which we experience firsthand the love and comfort of Jesus.

  1. 1. Rest Stops

    Jill Briscoe

One of the best known passages in the Bible is Psalm 23. It describes the relationship between a shepherd and His flock, in which He guides them through pastures, hills and dark valleys. In every case, the sheep are content because the shepherd is there, offering protection and comfort. We are the sheep in this story!

Jill teaches that no matter what is happening in our lives, good or bad, the only way we can find true contentment—and even joy—in every situation is by trusting in the Lord, our shepherd, who promises to never leave us.

  2. 2. Overloaded

    Jill Briscoe

Have you tried to carry all of your groceries into the house in one trip so you didn't have to go back out to the car? Your arms are aching, the bags are pinching your fingers, and the food is beginning to slide out. But you keep moving, hoping to get everything into the kitchen before the bags break!

Now imagine that someone in your family came out as you were unloading your bags and offered to carry them so you could sit down to rest. You probably wouldn't turn them down! Well, Jesus has made this offer—He wants to carry our burdens. We just need to say yes.

In Matthew 11:28-29, Jesus says:  "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

    Scripture:  Matthew 11:28 - 11:29
