Truly Centered

Pete Briscoe

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. (Col 2:6-8)

Do you have to "do" certain things to earn favor with God? The idea that we can earn salvation contradicts God's Word. But if we don't truly understand what a Christ-centered life is all about, we can be deceived by things that sound reasonable but are actually lies.

The apostle Paul wrote to the Colossians about this problem. False teachers were working their way into this young church and bringing with them a list of dos and don'ts that had nothing to do with Christ! Paul countered by illustrating what a Christ-centered life should look like. No area was off limits: marriage, evangelism, ministry, friendships, conflict, forgiveness, and legalism.

In this series, Pete Briscoe explores the characteristics of a life surrendered to Christ by leading you step by step through Colossians. Insightful, and very practical, you'll find Pete's teaching to be an excellent blueprint for godly living.

Messages From This Series:

  1. 1. Christ-Centered Evidence

    Pete Briscoe

Our culture will tell you you need gadgets, a big house, and a fancy car to experience a full life. But the Bible makes it really clear that having a Christ-centered life will fill you right up. How do you know you're living a Christ-centered life? In this message, Pete gives us two evidences of how we can know our lives are Christ-centered in hopes of us wholeheartedly pursuing Christ.

    Scripture:  Colossians 1:1 - 1:8

  2. 2. Christ-Centered Growth

    Pete Briscoe

Sometimes we feel stuck—stuck in the same pattern of one step forward and two steps back. We see growth in the lives of other Christians and we wonder what we're missing. Pete Briscoe shares the freeing truth that spiritual change doesn't happen from trying harder. We forget that so often. No wonder we're frustrated! In this message we are reminded that lasting change only occurs through God's grace and power. We will learn that our responsibility in growth is to "ask and bask."

    Scripture:  Colossians 1:9 - 1:14

  3. 3. Christ-Centered Reality

    Pete Briscoe

A lot of people hope to find fulfillment in material things, but it never really works. Other people try to find it in parenting their kids, excelling at work, or traveling around the world. These things are not designed to bring fullness. Jesus offers us "life to the full," and we can have everything we will ever need when we have a personal relationship Christ. In this message, Pete talks about four things we need to know about Jesus in order for Him to fill us up.

    Scripture:  Colossians 1:15 - 1:18

  4. 4. Christ-Centered Beginnings

    Pete Briscoe

Have you ever met someone special, like a famous actress or professional football player? It's so exciting that you want to tell everyone you know. Many of us feel that way after we become a Christian. What God has done for us is so wonderful and amazing that we want to run out and share the Good News with everyone. In this message, Pete uses an analogy of the timeline of the Christian life to share the amazing gifts God has given us.

    Scripture:  Colossians 1:15 - 1:23

  5. 5. Christ-Centered Ministry

    Pete Briscoe

Kids love to make their parents proud. In fact, even when kids become adults, they still strive to make their parents smile and say, "Good job!" We should want to make God, our heavenly Father, proud of us, too, and we can do this by serving Him. Serving is not always easy, but the results can be amazing. You can make such a big impact on people's lives and not even know it. In this message, Pete shares six lessons we should learn about ministry so we can truly understand how to serve God.

    Scripture:  Colossians 1:24 - 1:29

  6. 6. Christ-Centered Walking

    Pete Briscoe

Have you ever thought about what professional divers go through? First, they have to jump off a really high board, and then they complete a series of turns and flips. Sometimes they perform well; sometimes they don't. The Christian walk can be the same way. Lots of us are willing to jump off the board, but we belly flop in our Christian life because we don't know what to do next. It's great we are willing to jump, but the dive matters, too. In this message, Pete explains three important things we need to know about the dive, or what happens after we put our trust in Christ for salvation.

    Scripture:  Colossians 2:6 - 2:10

  7. 7. Christ-Centered Fullness

    Pete Briscoe

Food, family, vacations, and work are all things we often rely on to fill our lives up with goodness and happiness. Although these things may work for a while, eventually they fail and we are left feeling empty. But Jesus can change all that because He died on the cross for each and every one of us. In this message Pete shares with us four ways we can find fulfillment by understanding what Christ's death, burial, and resurrection really means for us.

    Scripture:  Colossians 2:11 - 2:15

  8. 8. Christ-Centered Caution

    Pete Briscoe

When it comes to your Christian life, if you are in Christ, you have life and no one can take it from you. But there are certain things that can rob you of your life. They can rob you of your joy, they can rob you of your growth, and they can rob you from experiencing life fully. The apostle Paul tells us we need to be cautious of these things. In this message, Pete explains three things that the apostle Paul says we need to beware of so that our Christian life can be all that God meant it to be.

    Scripture:  Colossians 2:16 - 2:23

  9. 9. Christ-Centered Focus

    Pete Briscoe

When taking a picture, you first look through the viewfinder and then determine what will be the focal point of the photo. If your life were a picture, what would be the focal point? The apostle Paul tells us our focus has to be Jesus Christ, and everything else in our lives must compliment Him. In this message, Pete walks us through what the apostle Paul says about making Jesus the focal point of our life.

    Scripture:  Colossians 3:1 - 3:4

  10. 10. Christ-Centered Wardrobe

    Pete Briscoe

Imagine you are walking in a park and you slip and fall into a pile of mud. Your clothes would be filthy! Those filthy clothes represent the old life you had before you knew Christ. But when we become Christians, God has a whole new wardrobe He wants us to wear. In this message, Pete explains what rags we need to remove from our lives so that we can put on the new garments God has for us.

    Scripture:  Colossians 3:5 - 3:17

  11. 11. Christ-Centered Marriage

    Pete Briscoe

How would you describe your marriage? Would you say that there is one spouse who is more "in charge" than the other? Or would you say that both spouses graciously serve each other? In Ephesians 5, the apostle Paul talks about wives and husbands submitting to one another. This text is often hard for married couples to understand because it's usually misunderstood. In this message, Pete explains what it really means to submit to one another and lets us know how the Holy Spirit makes this possible.

    Scripture:  Colossians 3:16 - 3:19

  12. 12. Christ-Centered Proclamation

    Pete Briscoe

It is normal and natural for a Christ-centered person to want to share the life that he or she has found in Christ, but it's not always easy to do. The apostle Paul knew this, so at the end of the book of Colossians, he gave us some helpful hints on how to share our faith with others. In this message, Pete walks us through the eight things Paul highlights to help us grow God's kingdom.

    Scripture:  Colossians 4:2 - 4:6

  13. 13. Christ-Centered Friendship

    Pete Briscoe

Friends are fun, special, unique, diverse and important. Even though God fulfills our every need, He brings other Christians into our lives so we can see Him in new ways and experience Him with them. Using the apostle Paul's friends as examples, Pete outlines six types of friends we should all have in our lives so we can grow in the community of believers.

    Scripture:  Colossians 4:7 - 4:18
