Dance Lessons

Pete Briscoe

How do you see God? As a strict military drill instructor who expects you to march in sync to a set of shoulds and should nots? Or as a dance teacher who instructs and encourages you to keep your eyes on him even when you trip up? Be honest. If you're marching, you're going through the motions rather than embracing the journey God has for you.

God wants you to dance! To stop concentrating on the steps and, instead, focus on Him! With joyful abandon! Moved by the Spirit! With overflowing gratitude! Surrendered to whatever He has waiting for you!

Are you tired of the ho-hum Christian life? Are you ready to abandon the march and follow wherever Christ leads you? Pete shows you how in this powerful 23-message series from the Book of Galatians.

An accompanying 100-day devotional book is available for the Dance Lessons series as well as a 3-message CD overview called Stop Marching, Start Dancing.

Messages From This Series:

  1. 1. Free to Dance

    Pete Briscoe

Is Jesus your drill sergeant or your dance instructor? Are you marching along, trying to be good enough, trying to keep in step with everyone else? Jesus is calling you out of the march and into a dance with Him—sometimes messy, sometimes uncoordinated, but always focused on Christ, moved by Life with Him.

In this message, Pete Briscoe invites us to stop marching, stop watching the dance from the sidelines, and start dancing with life and joy!

    Scripture:  Colossians 2:6 - 2:10 , Jeremiah 31:13 - 31:14

  2. 2. You Already Have an A

    Pete Briscoe

Do you remember cramming for tests in school, memorizing facts to ace an "A"? You probably also remember the stress and the pressure to get everything right. Too many believers are living their spiritual lives this same way, trying to earn an "A" by doing and saying all the right things.

If that's you, there's something you need to know—you already have an "A" because Jesus took the test for you through His death and resurrection! In this message by Pete Briscoe from his series on Galatians, learn why you don't have to march to the beat of the perfect Christian life anymore... you can dance!

    Scripture:  Galatians 5:1

  3. 3. He Has Set Us Free

    Pete Briscoe

There's a story told that Abe Lincoln purchased a slave and immediately told her she was free when they walked away. She began to question him: "Free to think what I want? Free to go where I want to go?" When he answered, "Yes," she replied, "Then I think I'll go with you."

Do we really understand that we are completely, joyously free, through Christ? And if we do, why do we continue to act like we're not?

    Scripture:  Galatians 5:1 , Luke 4:14 - 4:20

  4. 4. There's Oil in Your Coffee

    Pete Briscoe

Galatians is different than other letters written by Paul. In every other epistle, he finds something for which to praise the young churches before giving them advice. However, he's so angry with the Galatians that he skips that section all together. Why?

In a single word—legalism. It had infected their churches, and even today, it minimizes what Jesus did on the cross and tells us we have to do something, too, to earn salvation. Listen as Pete Briscoe teaches us  how to avoid the lie of legalism and trust in Christ alone.

    Scripture:  Galatians 1:1 - 1:8

  5. 5. The Good News

    Pete Briscoe

Martin Luther said, "Preach the Gospel to yourself every day." We need reminding sometimes! In this message from Pete's series, Dance Lessons, he turns to Paul's letters to summarize the Gospel message and apply it to everyday life. Who are you in Christ? How does His death and resurrection empower you to overcome sin, trials, and even death?

    Scripture:  Galatians 1:11 - 1:15

  6. 6. I Got It from Jesus

    Pete Briscoe

If you have friends who are not believers, they may ask how you know the Gospel is true. Paul was asked, too. Could he have misunderstood what others told him? Did he have some details wrong? No! Paul received the truth of the Gospel straight from Jesus—not from men!

In this message from Pete Briscoe's series, Dance Lessons, he uses Paul's letter to the Galatians to teach how the Christian life starts, how we are to live it, and what living in the spirit looks like. It's not a set of rules, but a wide open door to follow Jesus!

    Scripture:  Galatians 1:11 - 2:10

  7. 7. Tribal Rules

    Pete Briscoe

When Jesus breathed, "It is finished," that was it! And yet, it's pretty common to find churches and Christians embracing additional rules that good Christians should follow. You might even be following some of them yourself. Do these tribal rules, as Pete Briscoe calls them, bring people closer to Jesus or keep them away? Are they making you reluctant to share your faith with those who don't look or live as you do?

The same thing was happening in the early church, and it sparked an argument between Paul and Peter. In this message from Dance Lessons, Pete explains the danger of these rules and why we can live in glorious freedom from them.

    Scripture:  Acts 11:19 , Galatians 2:11 - 2:14

  8. 8. Justification and the Cesspool

    Pete Briscoe

Jesus invited us to a dance, and we've turned it into a march of soldiers, always checking to see if we're doing it right and in step and in line with all the other soldiers. -Steve Brown, "A Scandalous Freedom"

Are you exhausted from marching in your spiritual life and longing to dance? What's holding you back? Pete Briscoe tackles this question in this message from his series, Dance Lessons. If you want to dance but are afraid it will take you too far in the other direction and you might fall into sin, you'll want to listen as Pete teaches from Galatians.

    Scripture:  Galatians 2:15

  9. 10. The Normal Christian Life

    Pete Briscoe

Have you ever wondered what a normal Christian life looks like—what the core aspects of a faith walk are, or why your faith walk looks different from someone else's?

In this message, Pete Briscoe seeks to answer these questions by outlining a passage of Scripture that he believes to be the secret to understanding the Bible and the Christian life. He shows us what it looks like to dance with the Spirit instead of marching to a set of rules.

    Scripture:  Galatians 2:20

  10. 11. I Died

    Pete Briscoe

Paul tells us that we are free from the law—we were freed when we died with Christ and were reborn into new life with Him. So why do we keep acting like we're still under the law? Why are we still marching when we could be dancing?

In this message, Pete Briscoe explains what Paul meant when He said that we were crucified with Christ and are no longer alive, and what it looks like to live fully in this knowledge.

    Scripture:  Galatians 2:19 - 2:20 , Romans 7:1 - 7:4

  11. 12. I'm Indwelt

    Pete Briscoe

We've been told that we have died with Christ and are now indwelt with His Spirit. But what does that actually mean? How do we take hold of Christ's indwelling Spirit and live it out?

In this message, Pete Brisoce describes what it looks like to practically live by the Spirit daily, and how we can bear Christ's fruit in our lives through Him.

    Scripture:  Galatians 2:20

  12. 13. I'm Depending

    Pete Briscoe

Dependent isn't an adjective most people would want to use to describe themselves. Rather, we would like to be independent, in control. Paul writes about being dependent on Christ as a wonderful and necessary thing for Christian living. It is a privilege!

In this message, Pete Briscoe teaches us how dependence on God is a beautiful part of the dance, as we let the Spirit guide us through daily living.

    Scripture:  Galatians 2:20 , Mark 9:17 - 9:26

  13. 14. Choose Freedom

    Pete Briscoe

Most of us, if asked, would say that we believe that Christ's grace and sacrifice are sufficient to forgive us. But many of us still act as though we need to obey the law to be saved.

In this message, Pete Briscoe encourages us to let go of the burden of the law and take hold of the freedom Christ offers us. We don't need the safety of the law if we have Jesus!

    Scripture:  Galatians 1:6 - 1:9 , Galatians 3:1 - 3:6

  14. 15. The Law Doesn't Help

    Pete Briscoe

You don't need to take supplements if your diet is healthy. The same can be said of your relationship with Christ—you don't need to supplement His grace with the law if your walk with Christ is healthy.

What Pete Briscoe wants us to learn in this series, is that Jesus is adequate. You don't need supplements. You just need Jesus.

    Scripture:  Deuteronomy 27:14 - 27:26 , Galatians 3:10 - 3:28

  15. 17. Sons of God

    Pete Briscoe

Most of us, though we have been given a new primary identity with Christ in our salvation, still live in our original identities. We live as merely human, instead of as a powerful, Spirit-indwelt child of God.

In this message, Pete Briscoe challenges us to live out this new identity in Christ as we learn to dance with the Holy Spirit.

    Scripture:  Galatians 3

  16. 18. No Favoritism Here

    Pete Briscoe

Have you ever felt the negative effects of favoritism? Been passed over for a promotion because you're a woman, a different ethnicity, from a different socioeconomic background? We've probably all felt the effects of favoritism in some form, whether racism, elitism, or sexism (feminism or chauvinism). But the Bible is clear: each and every one of us who is in Christ is God's favorite!

In this message, Pete Briscoe walks us through Jesus' response to the sexism of the ancient Roman world, and he encourages us to remember that all of us are God's favorite.

    Scripture:  Galatians 3:26 - 3:28

  17. 19. Is He Showing Yet?

    Pete Briscoe

Have you lost your joy? Feel like you’re faking it in your Christian life, just going through the motions? The church in Galatia did. They became so focused on following the law and keeping certain rituals that they lost sight of Jesus in their lives. In his letter to that church, the apostle Paul provided them with a striking visual picture—when Christ is in you, it should be like a pregnancy, the more Christ in you, the more HE shows in your life and is reflected in your actions!

In this message, Pete Briscoe walks us through Paul's visual and encourages us to let Christ show in our lives!

    Scripture:  Galatians 3 , Galatians 4

  18. 20. One Thing

    Pete Briscoe

Sometimes, those do's and don'ts of Christianity can be overwhelming when you're marching. After all, there were 613 commandments to keep in the Old Testament law! When you start thinking you have to earn your salvation, it's easy to get overwhelmed by all the rules. But what if there is a simpler way?

Living in the grace of God and enjoying the dance comes down to one thing, one thing to focus all your attention and take away the feeling of being overwhelmed. When this one thing is our focus, we keep our eyes on Jesus and allow the dancing and the details to fall into place.

In this message, Pete looks at faith without all the rules and gives us that one thing on which we can focus.

    Scripture:  Galatians 5:1 - 5:12

  19. 21. Cast Your Vote

    Pete Briscoe

We all have a choice: independence or dependence. We can choose independence, our own way, following our flesh and consequently experiencing hatred, envy, discord, fits of rage, selfish actions. Or we can choose dependence on the Holy Spirit, walking with the Spirit and allowing Him to lead us where He wants us, allowing us to experience love, joy, peace, patience.

In this message, Pete Briscoe walks us through the two choices before each of us and encourages us to find Life by surrendering to the Holy Spirit.

    Scripture:  Galatians 5:13 - 5:21

  20. 22. Good Works

    Pete Briscoe

Ever do something nice for someone only to have it blow up in your face? Serve in a ministry only to end up tired and burnt out? Give to the church but never see it come back to you? Aren't good works supposed to be good? It could be that your motivation is in the wrong place. The apostle Paul tells us in the book of Galatians that good works done in the flesh will bring death and destruction, but good works done in the Holy Spirit at the Spirit's prompting bring life!

In this message, Pete Briscoe teaches us about good works and where they come from, and he encourages us to let ourselves be led by the Spirit.

    Scripture:  Galatians 6:1 - 6:10

  21. 23. The White Space

    Pete Briscoe

Are you living in the white space? Have you chosen to stop marching, but you haven't really started dancing yet? In this in-between space, you might realize that you have the freedom to say, "I don't have to..." but you haven't yet said, "I get to...!" In this in-between space, you might tend to stick with selfish decisions because you know you're not under the law anymore, but you aren't listening to the Holy Spirit's leading. If you are stuck in the white space, you are missing out on the marvelous adventure that comes from walking in step with the Spirit.

In this message, Pete Briscoe encourages us to finish the journey instead of stopping halfway. It's time for you to start dancing and experience all that Jesus has in store for you!

    Scripture:  Galatians 6
