Awhile back, I was invited by my good friend Mike to take my family horseback riding. It was an experience that really opened my eyes to the nature of God’s wonderful grace. If you’re like me, you may sometimes wonder just what God is doing in your life, and what He expects from you. And you may also worry, “Am I doing enough for God to say ‘well done, good and faithful servant’ at the end of my days?”

I want you to know that God does have a reward prepared for you. But it’s not for anything you’ve done, and you can’t earn it! Does that sound confusing? Let me get back to the horses and show you what I mean.

We don’t own horses, so we relied on Mike for everything. He brought his horses in his horse trailer. He fed and watered the horses. He saddled them up. He even helped us onto the horses and led us through the beautiful wilderness of East Texas. We climbed hills, traversed rocky terrain, and galloped through sparkling creek beds. And what did we have to do? Simply, hold on!

And that’s exactly what you and I are required to do in our own lives. Because when it comes to our eternal salvation, we bring nothing to the table. Jesus the Son saves us by grace. God the Father prepares good works in advance for us to do. And then the Holy Spirit prompts us and pushes us, empowers us, and produces fruit through us. What’s your job? Stay on the horse. Be carried along. Trust. And He will carry you through this adventure called “Kingdom living” that is unlike anything else.

Amazingly, the story doesn’t end there. Because at the end of this horseback ride of a lifetime, we hop off the horses and receive a reward! And you say, “That’s crazy! Why would I be rewarded for simply holding on?” It’s called grace! God is the one who does all the work through us and in us, and then, when all that’s done, He rewards US for all that stuff HE did. That, my friend, is God’s amazing grace.

So what does that mean for you today? It means you need to keep trusting in Him, no matter where you are in your life right now. Keep living for Him. Stay on the horse! You may be uncomfortably bumping along a beaten track, or feeling the exhilaration of the wind behind your back. Wherever you are on your journey, keep trusting until you reach your final destination.

Your eternal reward is waiting for you. Jesus is ready to welcome you with open arms as a “good and faithful servant.” You didn’t earn it or deserve it, so give thanks to your Father in Heaven for His free grace given to you—and keep holding on!
